The timeless Bernadette Peters was the guest of honor at a New Dramatists Luncheon at the Marriott Marquis yesterday, where she was serenaded by costars Elaine Stritch and John Dossett and honored by Joel Grey, who said she's been like a younger sister to him ever since she played just that in George M!.
And not only can Peters sing like an angel, but she gives good speech.
The Tony winner admitted, "I thought I was too young to get a lifetime achievement award.
"But when an old man with white hair tells you he's loved you since he was a little boy--which happened to me recently--you think, 'Maybe it's time.' "
OK, sure, but she still doesn't show it.
The woman looks as apple cheeked and adorable as when she was 18.
And as she also remembered, "When I was nine, I worked with Otto Preminger. I should get a medal!"

Could you give more details about your experience, please.
Did Elaine Stritch sing? If she did, what song?
Thanks

| posted: 5/28/2012 at 2:18:43 PM ET Yes Elaine did sing. I don't know the name of the song but the lyrics talked about "you being the best thing that ever happened to me". John Dossett sang a combination of You'll Never Get Away From Me and Together Wherever We Go and Joel Grey played a duet from George M! on a record and sang along with his part.

From: North Carolina | posted: 5/29/2012 at 9:00:46 PM ET Another short write-up about the luncheon:
You can always count on elegantly worded tribute speeches at the annual New Dramatists luncheon celebrating the org's latest lifetime achievement honoree. But at this year's event, held Thursday at the Marriott Marquis in honor of Bernadette Peters, a number of speakers opted to skip wordy eloquence in favor of a well-placed wisecrack.
"Making clever speeches takes a lot of work and a lot of time," Elaine Stritch said, by way of explaining her own lack of a composed tribute to Peters. "I just came from California, and it takes me three days to get over that. Because it's soooo ridiculous over there."
Even Stephen Sondheim, no slouch with words, kept it short and simple, speaking in a pre-recorded video. "By the time you hear this, I'll be in Shanghai," he said of his absence. "I'd love to be there with you, but I wanted to eat Chinese and the place on 49th Street wasn't open today."

I think the song she sang was "The Best Thing That Has Ever Happened" from Road Show.

I saw Stritch when she performed at the Walt Disney Concert Hall (May 19th). She had a very difficult time remembering lyrics. She seemed to be very frustrated that she couldn't remember the lyrics and would ask Rob for the next line. She was able to get through "The Ladies Who Lunch", I consider that to be her song.

Yes, the Walt Disney Concert is very beautiful. My tickets for Stritch were in the balcony and my seat was in the rafters, lol, and the guard rail was very very low. It was a little scary.
So are you currently living in NY or CA?
